Every week in clinic, I sit across from women in their 40s who have been doing everything right and not seeing the results they should be getting.
They're using good products. They're consistent. But something isn't working.
Nine times out of ten, the problem isn't the products themselves.
It's the order, the combination, or the fact that their routine hasn't evolved to match what their skin actually needs in this decade.
Your 40s are genuinely one of the most impactful decades to get your skincare right. Here's exactly what I'd tell every woman who sits in my treatment chair.
What happens to skin in your 40s
In your 40s, several things change simultaneously. Collagen production, which has been declining at around 1% per year since your mid-20s, becomes visibly noticeable.
Oestrogen levels begin to shift, and with them, the skin's natural oil production decreases.
The result is skin that's drier, less plump, slower to recover from environmental stress, and more prone to uneven tone and pigmentation.
Fine lines deepen, particularly around the eyes and mouth. The skin loses some of its natural luminosity.
And crucially, the products that worked perfectly in your 30s may no longer be doing the same job.
None of this is irreversible.
But it does require a deliberate shift in what you're using and how you're using it.
The foundation: what every routine needs
Before we talk about serums and treatments, the non-negotiables.
These three steps are the foundation of every routine I recommend, regardless of skin type or concern:
▸ A proper pre-cleanse. Most women skip this and it's the single most impactful addition you can make. SPF, pollution, and daily grime sit on a layer that your regular cleanser can't fully penetrate. A pre-cleanse - applied to dry skin before water - removes it. Everything you apply after absorbs better. The No.1 Before You Cleanse was created specifically for this.
▸ A gentle cleanser. In your 40s, avoid anything that leaves your skin feeling tight or squeaky clean. That sensation means the barrier has been stripped. A cream or milk cleanser that cleans without disturbing the moisture balance is what your skin needs now.
▸ Daily SPF. If you do one thing differently after reading this, make it this: wear SPF every single morning, without exception. It is the single most evidence-backed anti-ageing intervention available. Everything else is maintenance. SPF is prevention.

The ingredients worth investing in
Not all actives are equal.
In your 40s, here are the ingredients with the strongest evidence base for the concerns you're dealing with:
▸ Niacinamide. Reduces pigmentation, improves skin elasticity, minimises the appearance of pores, and evens skin tone. One of the most versatile and well-tolerated actives for mature skin. Exactly why it’s in the No.7 Youth Elixir!
▸ Hyaluronic acid. Draws moisture into the skin and holds it there. In your 40s, when natural moisture levels are declining, this is non-negotiable. Also in the No.7 Youth Elixir.
▸ Peptides. Amino acid chains that signal the skin to produce more collagen. Look for tripeptide-based formulas, the science behind these is robust.
▸ Bakuchiol. A natural, plant-derived alternative to retinol. Delivers similar firming and brightening benefits without the irritation that makes retinol difficult to tolerate, particularly around the delicate eye area. The active ingredient in the No.5 Eye Cream.
▸ SPF (every single morning). I will never stop saying this! The evidence for SPF as an anti-ageing intervention is stronger than for any serum or treatment available.
What to stop wasting money on
Every week women come into my clinic having spent significant amounts on products that are either wrong for their skin type, applied in the wrong order, or simply don't contain effective concentrations of the ingredients they're being sold on.
The biggest waste I see: heavy, occlusive night creams that sit on top of the skin rather than absorbing into it. In your 40s, your skin needs ingredients that penetrate — not products that just sit on the surface looking luxurious.
The second biggest waste: eye creams with heavy fragrance. The eye area is the most sensitive skin on your face and fragrance is a sensitiser. If your eye cream smells beautiful, that fragrance is doing nothing for your skin and potentially irritating it.
The third: anything with a 10-step routine requirement. Consistency beats complexity every single time. Four to six products, used twice daily, will outperform a 10-step routine used sporadically.
What to expect and when
This is the question I get asked most in clinic, and the answer that makes the biggest difference to whether people stick to a routine.
▸ Week 1–2: Skin feels different. Cleaner, less congested. You're not seeing results yet but the groundwork is being laid.
▸ Week 3–4: Texture starts to improve. Fine lines may look slightly softer because skin is better hydrated.
▸ Week 6–8: This is where the results become visible to others, not just to you. Skin tone is more even, radiance is back, and the routine feels effortless because it's become habit.
The women who get the best results from their 40s skincare routine are the ones who commit for two months before they judge. Give your skin time.
