Salicylic Acid: The Ingredient I Recommend Time and Time Again for Clearer, Healthier Skin

By Laura Porter | Professional Skin Therapist | 5 minute read | Updated August 2026

If I had a pound for every time someone sat in my clinic chair and said, “Nothing seems to clear my skin,” I’d probably be writing this from a beach somewhere! This week, I’m talking about one ingredient I recommend time and time again—Salicylic Acid. It’s not a trend or a miracle cure, but when it’s used correctly, it can make a real difference to the look and feel of your skin.

Love,

Laura x

Why I Recommend Salicylic Acid So Often

One of the most common conversations I have in the clinic goes something like this…

“Laura, I wash my face every day, but my skin still feels bumpy.”

Or…

“I keep getting blackheads around my nose.”

Or…

“My skin just never feels completely clean.”

If that sounds familiar, you’re certainly not alone.

The problem usually isn’t that you’re not cleansing your skin.

It’s that your skin needs the right ingredients to help remove the build-up that can collect inside your pores over time.

That’s one of the reasons I love Salicylic Acid so much.

So, What Is Salicylic Acid?

Let’s keep it simple.

Salicylic Acid is a gentle exfoliating ingredient with one very clever advantage—it can travel into your pores, where excess oil, dead skin cells and everyday impurities tend to build up.

Think of it as giving your pores a really good spring clean.

Unlike harsh scrubs that work only on the surface of your skin, Salicylic Acid works where congestion often starts.

Over time, this can help your skin feel smoother, look brighter and become less prone to blackheads and blemishes.

Why It’s One of My Favourite Ingredients

One thing I always explain to my clients is that breakouts don’t usually appear overnight.

They’re often the result of a gradual build-up:

Excess oil.

Dead skin cells.

SPF.

Make-up.

Pollution.

Everyday life.

This about your skin as your third kidney it’s often excreting things going on inside. Another thing I really preach. But let’s leave that for another day.

When that build-up isn’t removed effectively, your pores can become congested, which is when blackheads and blemishes often begin to appear.

Salicylic Acid helps to gently clear away that build-up without the need for harsh scrubbing.

And that’s really important.

Because your skin doesn’t need to be scrubbed until it squeaks.

It needs to be cared for.

Three Things I See Every Week in Clinic

Over the years, I’ve noticed the same mistakes coming up again and again.

1. Scrubbing the Skin Too Hard

Many people think the harder they scrub, the cleaner their skin will be.

Unfortunately, the opposite is often true.

Over-scrubbing can irritate the skin, weaken the skin barrier and actually make the skin feel more sensitive.

2. Skipping Moisturiser Because Their Skin Is Oily

This is one of the biggest skincare myths.

Oily skin still needs hydration.

When your skin becomes dehydrated, it can actually produce more oil as it tries to compensate.

3. Using Too Many Active Products at Once

It’s understandable you want results.

But layering lots of strong exfoliants and treatments together can overwhelm your skin.

I’ve always believed that a simple, consistent routine will outperform an overly complicated one.

Healthy skin is built over time, not overnight.

Who Is Salicylic Acid Best For?

I often recommend Salicylic Acid to clients experiencing:

✔ Blackheads

✔ Breakouts and blemishes

✔ Congested pores

✔ Oily or combination skin

✔ Uneven skin texture

✔ Skin that never quite feels completely clean

That doesn’t mean everyone needs an aggressive skincare routine.

Quite the opposite.

The goal is always to support your skin, not overwhelm it.

Why I Chose It for No.2 Foaming Cleanser

When I started developing No.2 Foaming Cleanser, there was never any question about which hero ingredient I wanted.

It had to be Salicylic Acid.

Not because it was fashionable, but because I’d seen first-hand how effective it could be for clients struggling with congestion and blemishes.

But I also knew I didn’t want to create another cleanser that left skin feeling tight and stripped.

That squeaky-clean feeling might seem satisfying, but it’s often a sign that your skin’s natural barrier has been disrupted.

I wanted something different.

A cleanser that works hard to remove excess oil, impurities and daily build-up while still respecting your skin.

That’s where the rest of the formula comes in.

Coco-Glucoside, a gentle plant-derived cleansing ingredient, creates a soft, luxurious foam that effectively removes dirt, make-up and excess oil without disturbing your skin’s natural moisture balance.

I also chose Rosehip Oil (Rosa Canina Fruit Oil) because it’s naturally rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins. It helps nourish the skin and supports hydration, leaving your complexion feeling comfortable after cleansing rather than dry or tight.

Another ingredient I absolutely love is Turmeric Root Oil (Curcuma Longa Root Oil). Traditionally known for its soothing and antioxidant properties, it helps the skin look brighter, calmer and more radiant over time.

I’ve also included Ginger Root Oil (Zingiber Officinale Root Oil), a botanical ingredient that helps revitalise tired-looking skin while providing antioxidant support, leaving your complexion feeling fresh and energised.

Together with Salicylic Acid, these ingredients create a cleanser that doesn’t just wash your face.

It supports healthier-looking skin every single day.

That’s exactly what I wanted No.2 to do.

Please note always rinse the skin twice after use for super fresh hydrated skin.

One Myth I Always Like to Bust

Myth: If you have oily skin, you don’t need moisturiser.

Fact: Oily skin still needs hydration and protection.

When skin becomes dehydrated, it can often produce even more oil to compensate. That’s why a balanced skincare routine is so important. Cleansing well is only one part of achieving healthy skin.

My Final Thoughts

If there’s one thing I’d like you to take away from this month’s journal, it’s this:

Don’t be afraid of Salicylic Acid.

Used correctly, it’s one of the kindest and most effective ingredients we have for helping congested skin look and feel healthier.

Remember…

Healthy skin isn’t about stripping your skin.

It’s about supporting it.

Choose ingredients that work with your skin, be consistent with your routine, and give your skin the time it needs to thrive.
